Episode 118: LADA & MODY Diabetes

Wondering what LADA and MODY diabetes are? In this episode, we discuss the details and differences between these and T1D.

While LADA and MODY get lumped in with type 1 diabetes (or worse, "diabetes" in general), they present their own unique challenges.

LADA stands for "Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults".

MODY stands for "Maturity-Onsite Diabetes of the Young".

Wins & Fails

Colleen's Win: I did some bolus experimentation to prevent some high patterns. About a month ago, I was sick for a week, and found that I had to bolus two and a half times what my pump said to bolus for any carbs I had. Just because of the insulin resistance from being sick.

Jessie's Fail: She had pizza and ended up with her BG going over 220 all night. She's beginning to think she's feeling a little burned out.

Tip of the Week

Just a semi-regular reminder to get outside and enjoy the fresh air!

Diabetes Spotlight

Freda Velcani wrote an article on diaTribe summarizing what MODY is and how someone might get it.

MODY is commonly diagnosed in late childhood to adulthood– typically before age 25 (and rarely after age 35). Neonatal diabetes, also caused by a single gene mutation, is diagnosed in newborns younger than 6 months of age.
  1. Can be passed down from an affected parent to a child.
  2. Not insulin dependent – people who are affected still produce some insulin.
