Today we’re chatting with Pastor Seth Bode, a pastor in the Lutheran church (and seminary pals with my church’s pastor), about faith and diabetes. Pastor Bode has an amazing perspective on living with type 1 diabetes in today’s world, and this is an episode you don’t want to skip!

Meet Pastor Seth Bode

At the time of this recording, President Trump had not limited public gatherings to less than 10 people. We checked in with Pastor Bode about the status of his church services and for the time being, they are live streaming their services instead of holding them in-person.

Wins & Fails

Colleen’s Win: My March 2020 A1c came back as 5.3%! It’s below 5.5%, which is my goal for this year, so I’m super happy with this number.

Jessie’s Fail: Jessie forgot to connect her CGM for the first day of track, which added a few steps to what she had to do for preparation.

Tip of the Week

As of this episode’s release, the world is in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic. For everyone who’s staying home in this trying time, please pay attention to your carb intake and your blood sugars. You’re out of your normal routine, and that affects your blood sugars.

Diabetes Spotlight

This week’s spotlight is on the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak (see a live map here). We’re doing a full episode on how our lives have been affected by the pandemic in episode 35.

JDRF sent out a note emphasizing that those with type 1 diabetes are NOT more at-risk to contracting the virus, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need to take precautions. I’ve heard that we should not experience delays in our supply shipments.

As type 1 diabetics, we need to focus on keeping our blood sugars under control. If you do get sick, talk to your doctor. Maybe go to the emergency room or urgent care if you were in contact with someone with the virus and you’re showing symptoms.

Keep a good stock of supplies on-hand. Download the expiration tracker at the bottom of this post. If you get sick, you’ll probably need ketone strips and some glucagon. Continue eating normally, if you can.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to remain calm. And, maybe, learn for yourself how your faith and your diabetes work together.

Stay safe, guys.
