In this episode, we talk about intermittent fasting with T1D. What it is, important things to know as a type 1 diabetic about it, and how to figure out if it’s something you should try.
Multiple scientific studies have proven that intermittent fasting (even with T1D) assists in weight loss and helps with loose skin. It also helps stabilize blood sugars in type 1 and type 2 diabetics.
Wins & Fails
Jessie’s Win: Jessie got accepted into her dream school, Montana State University! Here’s hoping there’ll be a CDN chapter there when she starts, or she can start one up herself! ?
Colleen’s Fail: My transmitter died at 77 days, when it’s supposed to last for 90. This is the second transmitter in a row that’s done this. The plus side is that I have a surplus of transmitters now since Dexcom replaced them, but the downside was 5 hours without CGM data or Control IQ and that messed with my control for a couple of days.
Tip of the Week
With many districts moving to online schooling this year, with no clue when kids will go back to the in-person classroom, it’s still a good idea to let your teachers know that you have type 1 diabetes. Email them information about what you will do to correct your blood sugars during class time, even though you’re at home. Remind them that if you’re eating at your desk, it’s for a reason!
Diabetes Spotlight
The spotlight this week is on immune-evading cells.
Medical Xpress published an article, “First Immune-Evading Cells Created to Treat Type 1 Diabetes”, on April 19th, 2020. The article talks about there having been success in injecting “immune shielded” cell clusters.
Using stem cell technology, Salk researchers generated the first human insulin-producing pancreatic cell clusters able to evade the immune system… these ‘immune shielded’ cell clusters controlled blood glucose without immunosuppressive drugs once transplanted into the body.
They go on to talk about the steps of the therapy, from injecting the cells all the way to making sure they are independently immunoprotective.
This is a huge step forward for diabetic technology and research, so maybe a permanent therapy isn’t so far away!
Now It's Your Turn...
Have you tried intermittent fasting as a person with T1D? What did you learn about it and about yourself? What were your favorite and least favorite things about it?
